The completion of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1851 established a route from Portland, Maine, to Gorham, New Hampshire, and brought increased visitors to the area. John Bellows converted a farmhouse into a hotel the same year and then sold it in April 1852 to J. M. Thompson, who renamed it the Glen House and finished work on its rooms.[1] Expanded by 1866, the grand hotel featured views of Mount Washington, Tuckerman Ravine, and the northern Presidential Range. ] Guests included Albert Bierstadt, and the Bierstadt Brothers captured stereoscopic photographs of scenery in the area including a bear. John P. Soule, G. W. Woodward, Nathan W. Pease, and the Kilburn Brothers also captured stereoscopic images from the area, including mountain landscapes and other scenery as well as some of the grand hotel and its interior spaces. In 1869, Albert Bierstadt discovered hotel proprietor Col. Joseph Mariner Thompson's body down river from his sawmill following a heavy fall rainstorm.

If you’re not an alpine or cross country skier, or even a snowshoer, you can still experience a White Mountain winter in the comfort of a 12-passenger Mt. Washington SnowCoach. You travel four and half miles up the snow-covered Auto Road to tree line at approximately 4,000 feet on the 6,288 foot mountain, the highest peak in the Northeast. Then you ride it back down, while the fit and hardy can elect to cross country ski, telemark or snowshoe down the snow-covered Auto Road to the hotel.

The Glen House is a stylish and newborn classic of a hotel, a subtle but sleek and eco-forward property. It may be new but it has deep ancestral roots, since it’s the fifth such property on the site to be named The Glen House since 1852, when tourists began to visit the summit of Mt. Washington via house and carriage. Its predecessors came and went, as historic White Mountain hotels did, but this newcomer is clearly here to stay and built for 21st century concerns, with a geothermal system, a hydro generator and, in future, solar photovoltaic arrays. Even the moose head abopve the fireplace is a quilted sculpture, not a trophy. Savoring this fact was all the more pleasant because I was sipping coffee in the toasty great room of The Glen House, a new hotel at the base of the mountain.
